Luna is an ETX form factor computer based on the Intel Z890 chipset and represents the best in efficiency and high performance. It was designed and built on the ROG Maximus Z890 Apex motherboard for its supreme PCB quality, power stage design, extreme CPU overclocking potential and memory signal integrity. At its heart, it is powered by a binned 24-core, 24-thread Intel Core Ultra 9 285K with a P-core overclock of 5.6GHz, an E-core overclock of 5.2GHz, a 3.4GHz overclock on the NGU (Next Generation Uncore), a 3.8GHz overclock on the D2D (Die to Die) and a 3.8GHz overclock for the RING.
It is paired with an NVIDIA RTX 3090 Founders Edition with an overclock of 2.1GHz for moderate machine learning workloads and features 128GB of V-COLOR Manta XFinity (TMXFAL6468836KWK) memory, each paired with an IceManCooler ICE-HSG full copper water block allowing for an overclock of 7600MT/s C36 @1.53v (36-54-16-54) with fine tuned sub-timings and turn around timings for the lowest latency and highest bandwidth possible for 128GB dual rank DIMMs.
For the operating system(s), it uses a single Western Digital Black SN850X 4TB NVMe SSD for the sake of simplicity with a 25/75 partitioning for virtual machines. For storage, it sports a 56TB RAIDz2 array composed of four 14TB 7200RPM Western Digital hard disk drives. I went with a RAIDz2 configuration because it offers a very high fault tolerance and can be used in applications that require long-term data retention periods, such as archiving and surveillance. In addition, RAIDz2 uses two different sets of parity calculations and can rebuild an array even with two simultaneous drive failures. RAIDz2 requires at least 4 drives, with at least two for data and two for the parity information. Ultimately, RAIDz2 was a good balance of capacity, redundancy and performance.
Airflow is handled by an array of 24, 120mm Noctua Industrial PPC-3000 NF-F12 fans + 2, 120mm Noctua Chromax NF-S12A fans. 16 of the Noctua Industrial PPC fans are configured as intakes in push-pull for the front dual radiators and the other 8 fans are configured as secondary intakes in pull due to space limitations for the top dual radiators. The last two non-Industrial PPC fans simply act as rear exhaust. Because of the high-density/high-surface area nature that comes with running 4x 480mm radiators, these fans only need to operate at their lowest RPM, keeping power, noise and dust to a minimum.
Responsive fan and pump control is crucial for regulating heat transfer from the Heatkiller IV Pro water block. Fluid flow is driven by a 500mL Heatkiller Tube 200 D5 MP paired with Heatkiller's WCP D5-PWM pump and configured to run at a fixed speed of 4700RPM.
All fans are exclusively controlled by the coolant temp and idle at just 750pm RPM when the coolant is below 30c. I went with Noctua Industrial PPC fans for their reliability and will never run at their maximum RPM of 3000RPM outside of test scenarios. With this much surface area and cooling capacity, the system can remain ridiculously silent at both idle and full load.
